Car and campervan rental in Iceland
Cars, 4x4s, and campervans from verified local hosts. Prices in Icelandic krona with VAT included.
Insurance, deposits, and F-roads, explained
The price you see is the price you pay. Here is what to know before you pick up the keys.
Insurance shown before you book
CDW is usually included. Gravel protection is recommended outside Reykjavik, and sand and ash protection for the south coast. Every option's excess is shown on the listing.
Deposits held, not charged
Where a deposit applies, the amount and how the hold works are shown on the listing before you book, and it is released after the car comes back in order.
F-roads, done right
Highland F-roads need a 4x4 and are only open in season, roughly mid-June to September. Vehicles that allow them say so plainly. River crossings are never insured.
One trip, one checkout
Add stays and tours to the same cart as your car and pay once, in Icelandic krona with VAT included.
Car rental in Iceland, answered
The questions travelers ask most before renting.
What do I need to rent a car in Iceland?
A full licence held at least a year (plus an International Driving Permit if it is not in Latin script), the minimum age on the listing, usually 20 and higher for 4x4s, and a credit card in the main driver's name for the deposit.
Do I need a 4x4 in Iceland?
For the ring road and paved routes a regular car is fine in summer. For highland F-roads a 4x4 is required by law, and in winter a 4x4 gives you a safety margin. Listings marked F-roads OK are allowed on those routes.
Which insurance should I take?
CDW is usually included. Gravel protection is strongly recommended outside Reykjavik, and sand and ash protection if you drive the south coast. Every option's excess is shown on the listing before you book.
Where can I pick up and drop off a car?
Most hosts offer Keflavik Airport and Reykjavik, and each listing lists its own pickup and drop-off points. You choose them when you build the booking.
Are the prices final?
Prices are shown in Icelandic krona with VAT included. Any deposit or optional extra is shown on the listing before you pay, so the price you see is the price you pay.
